You have always wanted to become a morning person and get up earlier, but just don’t know where to start? How does one BECOME a morning person?

Well as you guys know after my second daughter, I stopped getting up an hour before the girls. Instead, I would start my day with the kids nagging me for chocolate for breakfast soon as I would open my eyes. It was making me cranky, stressed and putting me in a negative mind frame before the day even begun. My productivity was lacking and so was my energy levels. I decided enough was enough and decided to become a morning person again, and can I tell you it’s made a huge change for not only my mornings but also my entire day, my business and health!

Waking up earlier doesn’t have to be hard, some people like to go cold turkey and wake up 1-2 hours earlier. Now personally for me that doesn’t work too well. I find if I go cold turkey, I get really tired by the afternoon and I crash. So here is my method of teaching your body clock to get up earlier … gently.

Why Should I Become a Morning Person?

But why should you get up earlier? There are so many benefits to waking up earlier. If you look at the world’s most successful people, they ALL get up early and have a morning routine. Having an effective morning routine sets the tone for the entire day. Just like making your bed makes you more productive for that day! Here are just a few reasons you should become a morning person:

  1. Productivity
  2. Health
  3. Reduced Stress Levels
  4. Self-Care

Also here are some good books to read to also help you see all the benefits to waking up earlier:

How to Start Getting Up Earlier

Bedtime Routine

Now of course this is a no-brainer and it’s not all about getting to bed earlier (which yes is important), it’s about setting yourself up, so you fall asleep faster and have a better sleep overall! Some things I have implemented at bedtime is;

No alcohol close to bedtime: I notice such a difference when trying to wake up even after 2 drinks. Alcohol has a huge effect on your sleep; the duration and the quality. You might think that having a couple of wines will help you sleep but in fact it is going to make you much more tired the next day and a lot harder to get out of bed an hour earlier.

Avoid sugary and highly processed foods before bed.

Use the “Bedtime” function in your clock app on your phone so it can remind you when it’s time to get into bed.

Diffusers: Using essential oils in a diffuser next to your bed that are sleep promoting blends can really help get you feeling sleepy.

READ: Honestly reading helps me fall asleep so much quicker than if I was scrolling on your phone. If you’re not much of a reader listen to an audiobook!

Blue Light Filters: Turning off the blue light on your phone at night or using blue filter glasses will help your brain stop thinking its still daytime. Blue light will play havoc with your natural body clock!

Skull Water

Soon as your alarm goes off skull heaps of water! This will kick start your body after it has been in a fasted state all night. It instantly makes me feel more awake!

Change your Alarm Clock Tone

Does anyone else shudder at the sounds of their loud obnoxious alarm sound? Well it doesn’t have the be super loud and annoying. Why not wake up to a gentle sound that gradually gets louder? That’s what the bedtime function on your iPhone does. It has tonnes of different wakeup sounds that doesn’t make you want to throw your phone out the window.

Gradually Change your Wake-up time

Instead of waking up an hour earlier right away gradually get up 15 minutes earlier each week for 4 weeks until you reach your goal wakeup time. I did it this way so it wasn’t such a shock to my body and I wouldn’t crash in the afternoon. It also allows you to adjust your bedtime slowly too. On the downloadable template try slowly increasing your wakeup time!

Create a Morning Routine that Makes You Excited!

Your morning routine shouldn’t feel like ANOTHER THING you have to do. It is meant to be about looking after yourself and taking time just for YOU. My morning routine consists of coffee, stretching, meditation (just 5-10 minutes) and just sitting alone in the quiet (IT IS AMAZING). No kids yelling demands at me and nothing I feel like I have to rush around and do. There are so many things you can implement into your routine such as reading, exercise, listening to a podcast or music- whatever YOU feel like. I get excited for my morning routine everyday -it makes getting out of bed at 5am so easy!

I hope this blog has helped you learn some tips and ways you can start getting up earlier. Trust me becoming a morning person is the BEST thing you can do for yourself, your family, your health, your mind and even your business.
